The LIN bus works according to the Master-Slave principle. The Gateway control unit co-ordinates the communication to the respective sub-bus and is therefore called "Master".

The following functions are including in the tasks of a LIN Master:

In its capacity as Gateway it takes over the translation of data between the global CAN bus and the local LIN bus.

It co-ordinates the data transmission to the LIN bus and determines the data transmission rate. In addition, before each message that is exchanged with the LIN bus it sends a corresponding sequence (Header) which is received from all the bus devices and evaluated. The LIN master determines which message is sent at which time and in which time interval a new transmission of data should be done.

It makes diagnostic functions available for the LIN bus.
